As life slowly transitions back into normalcy, it’s only reasonable to start thinking about your next vacation. We’ve all heard a similar story about people going on vacation, and coming home to a burst pipe, or even worse, theft.

We know it’s easy to let the excitement of a vacation narrow our to-do lists, but it’s important to protect your home. We’ve created an easy checklist of important things you can do to maintain your peace of mind while away from the house.

Lock the doors and windows.

Even though this seems like the obvious thing to do, it’s easy to forget to lock that bathroom window, or sliding glass door. Be sure and check the upstairs floors too, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Leave a light on.

Leaving a light on is one of the easiest ways to create an illusion that someone is home. Motion detector lights are a great way to alarm potential burglars, and scare them away.

Lock up valuables.

If someone were to get into your house, be sure they won’t have access to your personal valuables by investing in a safe, or lock box. Don’t forget to include any important documents like your birth certificate, and your insurance or credit card information.

Don’t broadcast your plans online.

With the era of the internet comes easily accessible information. All it would take is a quick Google search to pull up your Facebook page, and see images of you on a tropical beach. Although we understand that you want to share your good times with your friends and family, if you can, try waiting until you’re back home to post your favorite pictures. If you do want to make a post while you aren’t home, don’t indicate how long you’ll be away, or that your house is sitting empty.

Engage your home security system.

An easy way to scare an intruder, is by having home security cameras pointed directly in your driveway, and front door. The obvious cameras will indicate that there are probably more hiding elsewhere. Post a home security sign in your front yard or window, to make it extra clear that your home is protected.

Prevent water damage.

If you plan to be away for a while, it might be smart to turn off your main water supply valve as a preventative measure. The last thing you want is to come home to a destroyed floor or cabinet due to a leaking pipe.
