I love living in a small community, especially one that gives when a member is in need. When someone is sick, friends and neighbors help out with meals, shopping, babysitting etc. When that escalates to a hospital stay, friends and neighbors kick it up a notch.

When an individual is hospitalized, more help is needed. One’s parents or spouse take time off work, travel, stay in a hotel, etc. None of this is covered by insurance, and the community really gets engaged and helps raise funds to help cover these expenses. I’ve always found this to be amazing: that the community will rally and really support people, even people they don’t know.

These are unexpected circumstances; you can’t plan for someone being sick, but you can be sure to have health insurance to help cover costs.

The same thing can happen in cases of accidents. Car insurance, with the right coverage, will cover the vehicle, medical expenses, etc., but it doesn’t pay for childcare, or for your spouse to take time off work to be with you at the hospital. These are expenses that can’t be covered by insurance, and are great cases for the community to help out, to create fundraisers, benefits and raise money to help families in need.

You can do your best to plan for the unexpected and make sure the biggest expenses are covered with insurance. Insurance is exactly for those cases: when something happens, you can make sure you are covered.

Why then, aren’t people more prepared for death in the family?
