If you’ve ever traveled or have plans to do so in the future, you’ve probably looked into renting a vehicle. It’s expected to stand and wait in a long line, but is it expected to get rental car insurance? The salesman sure thinks so, but is it necessary?

According to Home Media, “If you already have car insurance for a personal vehicle, you probably don’t need rental car insurance. If you don’t already own a car with insurance, rental companies automatically cover the bare minimum in your state. However, if you want more protection, or if you are traveling abroad or for business purposes, you might need to get rental car insurance.”

Using Your Personal Insurance

You are able to use your own car insurance for a rental car as long as it is a personal trip and non-business related. Talk to your agent about personal coverage limits and deductions, as well as where you’re traveling to. Some countries like Canada and Mexico, won’t take your personal insurance as your personal coverage does not extend, depending on the country.

You might also be covered when using your credit card, as various credit card companies also cover the physical damage on a vehicle when you rent.  Check with your credit card company before you travel.

So, Is Rental Car Insurance Worth It?

Rental car insurance can be expensive, and you technically don’t need to purchase insurance since rental cars are automatically covered for the minimum in their state. However, it can still be worth it in some situations.

Rental car insurance can give peace of mind, but it’s unlikely you will really need to use it.
